Clinical Application Program

Chair: Mary Jo Pisano, Ph.D.

Program Overview

The Clinical Application Program (CAP) is our advanced psychotherapy program. It builds on the Two-Year Program in Object Relations Theory and Practice, offering advanced training in applying object relations theory to clinical work. The CAP is open to current students or graduates of the Two-Year Program. Graduates of a comparable training program may also qualify. A Clinical Certificate in Object Relations Therapy is given upon satisfactory completion of these four components of the Clinical Application Program:

I. Graduation from the Two-Year Object Relations Theory and Practice Program

II. Completion of an additional 72 hours of Seminars

These hours can be earned by participating in one or more of the following seminars and conferences and the total hours must equal 72.

  1. Attending a seminar series in a local IPI program.

  2. Attending IPI weekend conferences after completion of the core Two-Year program.

  3. Participating in telephone seminars.

  4. Participating in a videoconference or teleconference series at one of the IPI sites. Currently, there are two series: (1) The Master Speaker Videoconference and (2) the Foundations of Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy series, both of which link presenters and students in Chevy Chase, Long Island, Omaha, Indianapolis, Panama and Salt Lake City by video and elsewhere by telephone or streaming video. (It is now possible to add more sites.)

  5. Attending a week-long Couple, Child and Family Therapy Summer Institute.

Supervision

The purpose of clinical supervision is to provide a space in which to process a supervisee’s experiences with the patient through containing, thinking together, understanding and developing clinical skills and knowledge with the supervisor. This can best be facilitated by the supervisor and supervisee following one patient over a period of time.

A student must be enrolled in or graduated from the two-year IPI Object Relations Theory and Practice Program or a participant in an IPI affiliate or local program seminar. In order to meet the supervision requirements, students are required to have three supervisory experiences, with three different IPI National Faculty. Supervision can be face-to-face, by telephone or by videoconference.

The following are the requirements:
(1) Students must have one individual supervision for 35 hours
(2) The remaining two supervision experiences can be:
Two more individual supervisions, each 35 hours
One individual, 35 hours and one paired, 50 hours
One individual, 35 hours and one group, 90 hours
Two paired, each 50 hours
One paired, 50 hours and one group, 90 hours.

Written evaluations of the supervisory experience are required by the supervisor and supervisee and are used to enhance the learning experience.

Personal Therapy

Two years of twice weekly psychotherapy with an analytically –oriented therapist (not necessarily of the object relations school) is required. The psychotherapy can either be prior to, or concurrent with, taking the program. More therapy may be suggested if indicated.

CAP participant applications, supervision evaluations and therapy requirements will be reviewed by the CAP Chair and may be reviewed by supervision committee.
