IPI's Mentoring and Welcoming Committees
Mentoring
IPI's Mentoring program is designed to further the professional and personal development of each Full Member of the Institute. Through the program, a mentor is assigned to each member who is interested. The Mentor relationship is based on the member’s needs, desires and aspirations, and focuses on imagining possibilities, promoting growth, and clarifying the member's goals. In this way, the Mentoring Program encourages members' progress toward fulfilling their professional and personal potential.

IPI provides training opportunities in three formats.
- Participants can enroll in one of IPI’s nationally recognized certificate training programs, which provide extensive training over extended periods.
- Participants can participate in a number of IPI's national educational opportunities on an intermittent, continuing education basis.
- Participants can take part in training programs, offered by IPI affiliates and IPI faculty, in numerous cities throughout the country, and in Panama City, Panama.
National Programs
IPI’s national training programs bring mental health professionals and faculty together to study with international contributors at the leading edge of the field, such as Otto Kernberg, Christopher Bollas, Peter Fonagy, Ted Jacobs, Glen Gabbard and Jill and David Scharff. National programs are offered through IPI’s central site in Washington DC, and each program leads to certification.
IPI offers five primary national training programs. Four of these programs - the Object Relations Theory and Practice Program, the Couple, Child and Family Therapy Program, the International Institute for Psychoanalytic Training, and the Clinical Applications Program – require participants to attend a combination of Weekend Conferences and Summer Institutes. Enrollment in any of these programs automatically makes the participant a member of IPI, with all membership benefits (including access to the psychoanalytic library through the PEP WEB, reduced fees for IPI conferences, a mentoring program, etc.). See the Membership page for more information.
The Supervision Program is available for all clinicians and does not require registration in other IPI programs or institutes (although such participation is recommended).
IPI also offers nationally-sponsored seminars that provide opportunities for training, and discussions with other clinicians, in a wide variety of topics. The Advanced Seminar Series covers topics that are either in response to current events (for example, IPI faculty member Charles Ashbach, Ph.D., led a seminar on The Fog of War after the start of the Iraq War in 2003), or are of current interest to IPI’s membership. Often, these seminars are scheduled to coincide with one of IPI’s weekend conferences.
IPI also facilitates Distance Learning Seminars, which meet regularly and are available throughout the world, via either telephone or videoconference. Two seminars are currently being held: the Infant Observation Seminar, and the Master Speaker Videoconference Seminar.
Continuing Education Programs
Most of IPI’s training events are also open, on a continuing education basis, to individuals who are not enrolled in a national certificate training program. One or more of IPI’s Special Conferences, Weekend Conferences, or Distance Learning Seminars (including the Infant Observation Seminar and the Master Series Videoconference Seminar)may be attended as the participant prefers. In addition, IPI either offers or facilitates access to supervision opportunities, study groups, and other seminars – in Washington DC or through one of IPI’s chapters or affiliated programs - that are open to the general profession. See the Continuing Education or Affiliate Programs pages for more details.
IPI Affiliates
IPI offers affiliated programs in Metro Washington DC, Panama City, Panama, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Affiliated programs reflect a partnership between IPI’s national program and its affiliated sites, and are either codeveloped or reviewed by IPI.
Many IPI faculty members also independently teach and offer supervision in a variety of locations. In some instances, these programs are cosponsored by IPI, although most programs are independent, and are not necessarily endorsed by IPI.
See the Affiliates Main Page for more information.
