Quotations from Sigmund Freud

"Anatomy is destiny."

"Every normal person, in fact, is only normal on the average. His ego approximates to that of the psychotic in some part or other and to a greater or lesser extent."

(On the process of melancholia): "There is no difficulty in reconstructing this process. An object-choice, an attachment of the libido to a particular person, had at one time existed; then, owing to a real slight or disappointment coming from this loved person, the object-relationship was shattered. The result was not the normal one of a withdrawal of the libido from this object and a displacement of it on to a new one, but something different, for whose coming-about various conditions seem to be necessary. The object-cathexis proved to have little power of resistance and was brought to an end. But the free libido was not displaced on to another object; it was withdrawn into the ego. There, however, it was not employed in any unspecified way, but served to establish an identification of the ego with the abandoned object. Thus the shadow of the object fell upon the ego..."

"Man has, as it were, become a kind of prosthetic God. When he puts on all his auxiliary organs, he is truly magnificent; but those organs have not grown on him and they still give him much trouble at times."

"Obviously one must hold oneself responsible for the evil impulses of one's dreams. In what other way can one deal with them? Unless the content of the dream rightly understood is inspired by alien spirits, it is part of my own being."

Program Overview

International Institute Psychoanalytic Training at IPI applies contemporary object relations and other psychoanalytic theories to understanding the analytic pair of analyst and analysand. The analytic training operates within and augments the existing learning matrix of the IPI.

The program appeals to those who cannot attend a traditional institute because of their location, family needs, work responsibilities, or preference for the orientation and training methods at IIPT.

Analytic candidates meet in person annually for one week-long summer institute and four weekend conferences over three years, and participate in person or by telephone in supervision, seminars on analytic theory and practice, and personal analysis.

Prerequisites

Graduation from IPI’s 2-year Object Relations Theory and Practice Program or equivalent.

Curriculum

Required Basic analytic curriculum is taught in one week-long summer institute; a weekly seminar in analytic theory and technique on Tuesdays from 2-3:30 pm, except for July and August in years 1, 2, and 3. One year of the Infant Observation Seminar; and one week summer institute in the Couple, Child and Family Therapy Program are required before or during analytic training.

Required leading edge analytic curriculum is taught during 4 IPI weekend courses in years 1 and 2, (analytic candidates studying together in candidate-only small groups and clinical case conferences) and 2 weekend courses in year 3.

Electives: 1 IPI seminar.

Together these curricula amount to 600 credit hours of instruction over 3 years of formal lectures, reading seminars, technique and process seminars/case discussion groups, videotape case presentation, infant observation, summer institutes, weekend modules, affective learning groups, feedback and review.

Personal analysis 4-5 times a week for at least 3 years (in person or in person and by telephone).
