Clinical Ethics for Psychotherapists, with Dr. Ernest WallworkCOURSE DESCRIPTION: Dr. Ernest Wallwork is a Professor of Ethics at Syracuse University and a psychoanalyst in private practice in Washington DC and Syracuse, New York. In this two-session videoconference course, Dr. Wallwork will probe the neglected issue of how to think ethically about interventions within a clinical hour. Each seminar will be focus on a case presentation that will (1) illustrate typical ethical issues encountered in psychotherapy, (2) help to differentiate the therapist’s dispositional role responses (virtues) from his/her normative judgments, and (3) demonstrate ethical (as well as technical) reasoning about transference and countertransference issues and various possible alternative interventions. Chaired by Caroline Sehon, Chair of IPI Metro in Washington DC. CE Credits in Ethics Education are currently required for licensing renewal of mental health professions in Utah. Infant Observation Seminar - 2012FACULTY: Nancy Bakalar, MD IPI’s Infant Observation Seminar is roughly a year long program in which a small group of students meet by telephone conference call for 2 hours over 25 sessions, roughly every two to three weeks. Meetings are scheduled so as not to conflict with major holidays and IPI weekends. Our next class will begin early in 2012. The seminar will likely be offered Friday afternoons, or possibly on Wednesdays. The purpose of the seminar is to provide an opportunity to have a first-hand experience of watching the development of the relationship between a young baby and his mother/caretaker; to hone observation skills; and to enhance one’s capacity to notice and use one’s countertransference. The group comes together to review process notes of observations written by students from their experiences with babies and caretakers. Students may elect to attend the seminar only, without actually having a baby to observe, but the student will have a deeper, richer experience if he or she participates in an actual observation. Students observe for one hour per week and write up their process notes afterwards. During the first 2 to 3 seminars we will cover how to find a baby and family, how to set the contract, etc. The only required readings are Esther Bick’s classic papers on infant observation. The theories of Klein, Winnicott, Bion and others are brought into discussions as the dynamic material in the process notes dictate. The cost of the seminar is $2,000 for 50 hours of instruction. For planning purposes, we would like to get an idea of the number of individuals who are interested in the next class or two.
