International Institute for Psychoanalytic Training (IIPT)

A distance learning psychoanalytic training of international scope using the Group Affective Model of learning

Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Psychoanalytic Education

International Institute Psychoanalytic Training (IIPT) at the International Psychotherapy Institute (IPI) applies contemporary object relations and other psychoanalytic theories to understanding the analytic pair of analyst and analysand. The analytic training operates within and augments the existing learning matrix of IPI.

Required Basic analytic curriculum is taught in a four year program designed as follows: 4 in-person weekends each of 3 years (2 wknds the 4th); an in-person week-long summer institute in each of three years; 1 weekly phone seminar in analytic theory and technique on Tuesdays from 2-3:30 pm, September-June each of the four years; 1 year of an infant observation seminar and 30 hours of training in couple, child and family therapy at IPI. The infant seminar and family component are required and may be taken as prerequisites.

Required leading edge analytic curriculum is taught during 4 weekend courses in years 1, 2 and 3 by analysts of national and international repute (analytic candidates studying together in candidate-only small groups using the Group Affective Model and clinical case conferences). In Year 4 and until graduation there is a requirement of 2 weekend courses and 22 hours of seminar including independent projects and presentations.

Together these curricula amount to 600 credit hours of instruction over 4 years of formal lectures, reading seminars, technique and process seminars/case discussion groups, videotape case presentation, infant observation, summer institutes, weekend modules, affective learning groups, feedback and review.

Personal analysis 4-5 times a week for a minimum of 3 years (in person or in person and by telephone or VOIP) to coincide with training.

3 training cases, 4-5 times/week, 2 cases for 2 years (340 hours) and
1 case for 1 year (170 hours), each supervised for 40 hours per year.

Prerequisites
Graduation from IPI’s 2-year Object Relations Theory and Practice

What IIPT candidates have said about analytic training at IIPT...
“It saturated my mind and experience—it really took over my life and thinking for three years—and from that place, I felt a depth and breadth of learning from experience that I had not had before.”

“It has changed my life, and it has changed my patients’ lives. Other people knew it before me.”

“I waited ten years for this institute to form because I wanted analytic training to be the kind of challenge that it turned out to be -- not just a cookie cutter academic formula, but the chance to truly stretch and grow as a professional and a person.”
